100th centenary

Centenary Update: 10 May 2010

Hi All

Well the Selwyn Hockey Club's 100th Centenary celebrations are now a thing of the past and although gone they will certainly not be forgot for sometime.

The Friday night Conversazione held at the Riccarton Club was attended by over 113 past and present member. Mark Burtt took those present through 100 years of the Selwyn Hockey Club, which he said would take about 20 minutes. His very worth while in depth presentation took one hour twenty minutes. For me personally,  it was the best one hour twenty minutes I have ever had to sit through and I am sure Mark could have kept going all night if time permitted.

The Club Day at Porritt Park was also a great success with both junior teams winning their games, followed by the Premier Women's closely fort 3 all draw against formidable Hornby team, this game was then followed by 5-1 win for the Premier Men's team against Harewood. Although the weatherman did his best to rain on our parade, this did not dampen the club spirit.

The Saturday night dinner in the Showgate Lounge, Riccarton Raceway, continued the great weekend with 150 past and present club members in attendance. Good food, good wine and more and more conversation was the order of the evening. Many stories were told about goals score to win games and of course goal that should have been scored throughout the last 100 years.

The clubs thanks go to those speaker such as, Jim Anderton (MP), Dave Coulter (Ex NZHF), Chris Maister (NZHF)  and the Guest Speaker for the evening Selwyn Maister for giving up their valuable time to come along and join in the clubs celebrations and make it a weekend to remember.

I can finish without say a few words about the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Mark Beatson as without the splendid job he did in keeping the evening on track, we might have still be going at breakfast time.

Cheers
Mike
Club Secretary
